Curriculum...

This year the material we will be covering will be determined by the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). For those of you unfamiliar with these standards, they are a series of national based science standards that were created by educators and researchers through the NRC (National Research Council), NSTA (National Science Teachers Association), and the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science). These standards were adopted by Illinois in 2013 and are the foundation for science and engineering education.

Our major focus throughout the course of the year is to understand the founding practices of science and engineering. These include:

We will learn about these practices as we study the following major topics:

  • Magnetism

  • Electricity

  • Forces of motion and stability

  • Life cycles of plants and animals

  • Adaptations of plants and animals

Your scientists and engineers will be learning science through observation, experience, questioning and design. They will have opportunities to see video clips, simulations and research done by fellow scientists around the world. They will explore while working in teams of 4, partnerships and individually. They will create science and engineering notebooks that stay here in class and will be sent home once the year is through.
