Introduction to Electricity!

This week we are starting our mini-unit on electricity. Students will be learning about:

  • the structure of an atom

  • static electricity

  • conductors and insulators

  • current electricity

  • parts of a circuit

  • how we have access to electricity

  • where electricity comes from

In order to start this unit I asked the students to fill out a KWL chart. K stands for "what I KNOW." The W stands for "what I WANT to know." The L stands for "what I have LEARNED" at the end of the unit. Below are some of the things the students wrote in their journal. They were very curious about how electricity makes it to our outlets, how electricity can be harnessed from lightning, and how electricity gets "inside" of a battery. Our labs over the course of the next few weeks are tailored to help them find the answers to these questions and several others.
