Designing a Switch!

Over the course of the past two weeks students designed a series of switches that could turn a light bulb on and off. They used a wide variety of materials based on their conductor and insulator tests. The purpose of the switch was to be able to easily turn on and off a light bulb. As part of the engineering design process, students had to come up with an idea, develop a blueprint, create and test a prototype and then improve it based on their results.

Our engineers carefully decided which materials would be the best conductors and the best insulators based on whether or not they were able to initially light their bulb. Some engineers made several adjustments to their prototypes while others completed rather quickly and had an opportunity to try building their second design.

It was a fun filled and exciting two weeks as students got a chance to use all they know about electricity and circuits to design their switches. Take a look at some of their outstanding designs:
