What is a Magnetic Field and can you see it?

The magnetic field of an object is a region around the magnetic material or a moving electric charge within which the force of magnetism acts (Wikipedia, 2007). You often see pictures of it on the internet that look like this:

The magnetic field shows the range of a magnets force. The closer to the poles the stronger the magnetic force, the farther away the weaker the force.

Students spent the day examining the magnetic fields of various magnets. They had an opportunity to use magnets and iron filings to compare what the fields of strong magnets and weaker magnets looked like. They recorded observations and drew sample pictures in their notebooks. They were quite amazed with their observations!
