Sticking to Everything: Static Electricity!
This week we are working on two labs that investigate the mysteries of static electricity. In the first lab students explored and observed what happens when you rub a series of materials together. In their notebooks they recorded what they saw. The materials they used were:
tissue paper
packing peanuts
balloons
felt
yarn
pop cans
pom poms
Students noticed that some materials stuck together and others did not. Some materials could push other materials away after being rubbed several times. Other materials attracted towards other objects. Some times rubbing materials and then touching other things caused a sark of light, and other times it produced a crackling sound.
